Change lives in a super uncomfortable place.
It’s a place where we come face to face with where we are and where we want to be.
And we have to make a tough call.
Do we go for it? Or do we stay?
Sounds kind of easy, right?
Just go for it. Riiiight ….
As a runner, I lived in the Black Hole of Training and didn’t even know it. It was my total happy place. I’d do six miles a day and a long run on the weekend with a day off. 30-40 miles a week. (And obvi I did my push-ups/sit-ups on my front porch after my run. Strength training … CHECK!)
I thought I was fit. (See Aaron’s last post on the Black Hole of Training.)
But I wasn’t getting any faster, or fitter, or better. And, not shockingly, I got hurt. Too many miles over too many years. I needed to do something different. So, I started doing high intensity intervals on the treadmill, more dynamic strength training, and mobility work.
Um … mind blown. It was … hard. And it hurt. It was a little scary. You’re not sure how you’ll come out on the other end. Your mind starts playing tricks on you. You think … this is probably good enough for today. I don’t think I can go any further, or faster, or longer. And worst of all … you start believing your doubts.
But, here’s the thing…
If we are willing to hang on… just a little bit longer. A few more seconds than we want. A little bit faster than we normally would. Heavier weights than are comfortable.
When we allow ourselves to come face to face with our edge – where we are and where we want to be – and we decide to make the leap, something magical happens … change.
Not just the ability to run faster, longer, harder and becoming more fit. All of that is nice. And it really happens.
But for me, the magical part was proving to myself I could do it. I could use my mind and go way farther than I thought. That is MAGIC. And it unleashes endless possibilities for growth. Not just in your workouts, but in your life.
And THAT’S what it’s all about.
