2019 Success: Your habit inventory


The science of habit is fascinating. There is a stark difference between will power and habit. Will power is driven by routines.  While effective, will power wanes down as the day goes on.  That’s why you can be “good” all day and then lose it after dinner, eating all of the cookies. But if it’s a habit, that is different.  It becomes an ingrained part of how you function and is completely independent of will power. It’s sustainable. It becomes your lifestyle.

A habit is a formula our brain automatically follows.  When I see cue, I will do routine in order to get a reward.  Focusing on changing our habits will lead to the change we want to see. To reengineer your habits, you have to have three things:

Be clear about your goals.

Where are you trying to make changes in 2019? Be specific. Write them down. Keep them focused.

Create a habit inventory.

What are your habits around these goals? Be specific. Write them down. What do you do (if you’re trying to break a habit), or what do you need to do (if you’re trying to make a habit) to develop habits in support of your goals?

Break down your habits.

Break down your habits into their three parts to truly understand them:

  1. Identify the cue. What prompts a habit? (It’s 3:00 and I’m tired and bored.)

  2. Identify the routine. What is the habit? (Latte time!)

  3. Identify the reward. This is why you do it. (Ok, now I’m ready to go again!)

Write this down. Make a plan. Experiment with different routines that deliver the same reward.  Do this until it shifts from a choice to a habit.  Once you can do this, you will gain power over it and you will see the change you want to see. Our Challenge kicks off on Saturday 1/5 and is rooted in creating a sustainable lifestyle through healthy habits. Doing this with a group will kick your 2019 off right.
